Open Minds Volunteer

Position Description

In the Chevron Open Minds Science School, teachers, students, and community experts come together for a week-long, curriculum-based experience designed to meet the needs of each individual learner. Each week is planned around a central question or “big idea” which drives its experiences. Because each week looks different, volunteers will be engaged in assisting students in a diverse array of projects that vary widely. What remains the same is that our Open Minds Volunteers are passionate about learning and supporting students.

Availability

  • Schedule: shifts typically take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on weekdays during the school year (September to June)
  • Commitment: two or more shifts per month

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with and transitions between and clean-up following classroom activities
  • Providing support to students during classroom activities and written reflections
  • Classroom management and engagement
  • Preparing and organizing supplies
  • Supporting outdoor activities seasonally
  • Working with basic tools (saw, hot glue gun, drill, box cutter)

Desired Skills and Qualifications

This position is best suited for someone who:

  • Is interested in or has a background in education (formal or informal settings)
  • Is able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Is passionate about and interested in helping kids learn
  • Has experience working with kids (an asset)
  • Has a science background (an asset)

  • Mandatory volunteer orientation: September 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Police record check
