Flutter alongside the Majestic Monarch Butterflies and splash around with the Tremendous Toe Biter (or Giant Water Bug) while discovering their majestic wings and fascinating tales. Get hands-on with these Alberta natives and explore their scientific significance. It's a bug's life with a twist!

Majestic Monarchs – Adult Only Science Workshop

Come out of your cocoon and become a "Butterfly Buff" as you explore the captivating life cycles of Monarch Butterflies. Learn to prepare, pin, and preserve specimens for both science and art, while hanging out with your fave science pals.


This experience includes:

90-minute workshop including two butterfly specimens.

All equipment and tools will be provided.

A sticker sheet of native Butterflies and Moths.

Plantable seed paper with wildflower seeds along with instructions.

Crash course in Butterfly Entomology

A so fly signature cocktail – The Monarch Migration and individual charcuterie plate per guest.

Tremendous Toe Biters – Adult Only Science Workshop

Don't worry, they won't really bite! Learn to pin down a Giant Water Bug (aka Toe Biter) for science or art. Get up close and personal with these aquatic hunters, commonly found lurking in Alberta's waterways.

The perfect bestie hang out or date night for science lovers!

This experience includes:

90-minute workshop including one Toe Biter for participants to work on and take home!

All equipment and tools will be provided.

A sticker sheet of native Alberta insects.

Plantable seed paper with wildflower seeds along with instructions.

Tremendous Toe Biters – All Ages Workshop

Learn to pin down a Giant Water Bug (aka Toe Biter) for science or art. Get up close and personal with these aquatic hunters, commonly found lurking in Alberta's waterways. But fear not! This workshop features captive specimens, not wild giants—so no need to worry about their infamous bites!

Time will fly as you learn about entomology and pin your own bugs!

    • What can I expect from these workshops?   

      Participants can expect an engaging and educational experience where they'll get up close and personal with Alberta-native bugs! You'll learn about the anatomy, behavior, and ecological roles of these fascinating creatures.

    • Is this event suitable for children? 

      Evening workshops are designed for adults and feature signature cocktails. The afternoon workshop is suitable for ages 10 +. Please note, guests between ages 10 – 15 must be accompanied by a chaperone to participate.

    • How are the specimens used in the workshop obtained? 

      Pretty Dead Taxidermy prioritizes ethical and sustainable practices in procuring the specimens used in the workshops. All specimens are sourced ethically and are obtained through natural means, such as found deceased insects or responsibly sourced specimens.

    • Do I need any prior experience with taxidermy or entomology to participate? 

      No prior experience is necessary! The Bugs & Bytes Insect Workshops open to individuals of all skill levels and backgrounds. The team from Pretty Dead Taxidermy will guide you through the activities and provide all the necessary instruction and support.

    • How can I register for the Pretty Dead Taxidermy Bug Workshops? 

      Registering is easy! Please click on the Buy Tickets or Member Tickets at the top of this webpage to register. Space is limited, sign up as soon as possible to secure your spot.

    • Can I bring my own bug specimens to the workshop? 

      Participants do not bring their own bug specimens to the workshop, everything you will need to enjoy the workshop will be provided.

    • How much is parking? 

      Parking is a flat rate of $10, or FREE with a Spark Membership. Parking is managed by Calgary Parking Authority through ParkPlus. Pay machines are located near the front doors, Zone 8310. To pay online with ParkPlus click here.
