Spark is officially welcoming you and your cohort back for a summer of science! The team at TELUS Spark Science Centre has been working hard behind the scenes to build a safe and fun space for you to visit. The reopening on June 18 will propel you into new and bold experiences like never before.

Time to Sizzle during Summer at Spark

Summer at Spark is a collection of sun-kissed experiences, full of unique and delightful encounters where science meets adventure...and Instagram.

  • Rocket Fuel – the new café just inside the main entrance. This new café will be serving Astronaut Ice Cream featuring nine different kinds of cones (yes, Pluto is included though it has officially lost is status as a planet!). Astronaut Ice Cream is part of Rocket Fuel, a café serving high-quality Monogram speciality coffees, and snacks.
  • One Day on Venus – Call it the morning star, the evening star, goddess of love … Venus’ bright, shining presence in the morning and night sky is one of the reasons humans look up in wonder. One Day on Venus (which happens to be 243 days on Earth) is an exhibition in the main atrium of the science centre that is a “showhome” for life on Venus. In thinking about life on Venus, the showhome becomes the centerpiece of a beautiful and moving exploration of what matters most in life – here or on another planet.
  • B!G Art Drive-In at Spark – a true classic movie experience in Spark's parking lot.
  • New Dome Show - Tricks of the Night Sky, Spark’s newest planetarium show takes you on a journey, narrated by Jay Ingram.

In the event that the reopening plan is postponed, all ticket purchasers will be notified and will receive an automatic full refund.

If travelling by public transit, take the LRT to the Zoo Station, exit the Zoo pedestrian tunnel to the right (north). Walking time to Spark from the Zoo is approximately 10-15 minutes. Spark is conveniently located near Calgary's bike path system.

ACCESS 2

Aides with the Access 2 pass assisting guests with disabilities can attend the facility at no cost and must call 403.817.6800 to reserve a complimentary ticket.

What Spark is Doing to Keep You Safe

  1. The science is in! Spark requires everyone to wear a mask inside the building
  2. Spark will be operating at up to 30% capacity, of the Alberta Fire Code
  3. All cleaning procedures now use “wipe twice” method to clean first, then disinfect second (as required by AHS) 
  4. All cleaning products comply with Health Canada's COVID-19 cleaning regulations
  5. All garbage bins replaced with touchless receptacles, and emptied more regularly where PPE is being discarded by visitors or staff 
  6. Increased number of touchless hand sanitizers for visitors and staff with at least 60% alcohol-based 
  7. Corridors and pathways where social distancing is not possible have been physically divided for two-way paths where needed.
  8. Physical Plexiglas barriers in place at all payment stations for tickets, food, and in the store to prevent the spread when social distancing isn’t possible
  9. All guests will be asked, while seated in Spark's Eatery, or the new Rocket Fuel cafe, to stay sitting with the cohort they arrived with.
  10. While enjoying snacks at Spark's Eatery, or in the new Rocket Fuel cafe, guests will be allowed to remove their mask while seated to enjoy their snacks, but will need to wear their mask while moving around in these areas to prevent the spread, and follow the Alberta Health Services guidelines.

Health & Safety Guidelines

Science has never mattered more. To help protect against the spread of COVID-19, you should:

  • Stay home if you are exhibiting any COVID-19 symptoms, or have been in contact with anyone sick with COVID-19 within the last 14 days
  • Spark will be complying with the City of Calgary bylaws, and the AHS guidelines.
  • Help prevent the spread by following the Alberta Health Services Guidelines, and please, if you are eligible, get vaccinated!
  • Self-screen using the Alberta COVID-19 Self-Assessment
  • Wash your hands often and well for at least 20 seconds. Refer to hand-washing guidance here.
  • The health and safety of Spark's employees, visitors, volunteers, families and students are a top priority. Spark is closely monitoring regular updates about COVID-19 and following guidelines from the Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

FAQs

    • What happens if I miss my scheduled time?

      Guests have 30 mins from their scheduled ticket time to enter Spark. If you arrive later than 30 mins from your scheduled time, you will not be permitted to enter the building to ensure safe capacity limitations are followed.

      If you need to rebook or cancel your scheduled ticket time, please call 403.817.6800.

      Rescheduling tickets is based on availability and is not guaranteed.

    • Will I have to wait in line to get into Spark?

      Spark will limit any unnecessary contact or crowding by capping daily guest admissions, however, there may be entrance waiting times and experiences onsite. All lines will require physical distancing of 2 meters. Spark appreciates your patience and strives to deliver a positive guest experience for each visit.

    • Do members need a timed ticket?

      Yes. All members will still be required to reserve a timed-ticket to ensure safe capacity limitations are followed.

    • Do children ages 2 and under need a timed ticket?

      Yes. Admission for children 2 and under is free, but still require a timed ticket to ensure safe capacity limitations are followed.

    • Will there be food available for purchase?

      Yes. The Spark Eatery will be open at limited capacity. Socially distanced seating is available throughout the building.

    • Why do I need to wear a mask indoors?

      The science is in! For the safety of our employees and guests, TELUS Spark Science Centre will require all guests over the age of 2 to wear a mask while indoors at Spark. Masks will not be required outdoors in the Brainasium Outdoor Park. If there is a reason you or your child cannot wear a mask, please inform the staff upon arrival. You may bring and wear your own masks or you may also purchase a reusable or disposable mask at the Spark Store.

    • How is the air being filtered at Spark?

      Spark uses MERV 13 pre-filters and heap main filters. Its air handling units are “Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems” DOAS. These units take 100% outdoor air, condition it then supply the building. The air is then returned from the conditioned space and exhausted outdoors.

    • What should I bring with me?

      Masks. All guests over the age of 2 are required to wear a mask indoors. Disposable and reusable masks will be available for purchase on site (limited quantities available).

      Plan for outdoor weather conditions.

      Water - Vending and bottled water is available for purchase. Water fountains will be closed.

      Sunscreen – Limited indoor spaces are available for access.

    • Can I leave and come back in?

      Due to Spark’s timed ticketing system, visitors will be required to leave immediately after visitation to eliminate congestion on the property or in the parking lot.

      Once you exit you cannot re-enter the same day without a new timed ticket.

      However, you can re-enter the building to visit the Spark Store or food kiosk if the building capacity has not been reached.

    • Is the Spark Store open?

      Absolutely! You can also shop online and your purchase will be ready for pickup when you complete your visit.

    • Do membership discounts still apply in the store?

      Yes, all members receive a 10% off discount off the Spark Store.

    • Is the experience wheelchair accessible? Are wheelchairs available to rent?

      The outdoor pathway may not be accessible in parts. Limited wheelchairs are available onsite for a small deposit on a first-come first-served basis.

    • What if I have a complimentary ticket?

      Complimentary tickets will still be honoured at this time. To use your complimentary ticket, please call 403.817.6800.

    • Are you accepting cash?

      Touchless transactions are preferred, however, cash payments will also be accepted.

    • I am fully vaccinated, do I need to wear a mask?

      Spark will be complying with the AHS guidelines, and the City of Calgary mask bylaw as long as they are in place.
