You're a builder. You're a maker.
Located in Open Studio, the Workshop offers a safe space to learn new skills by working with real tools.
Take the safety oath and practice using saws, hammers, drills and more to build a collaborative project. Best for ages 8 and up, all activity is facilitated by our trained staff to accommodate a variety of skill sets.
The drop-in workshop runs daily from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and is included with membership or admission to TELUS Spark.
Tools that Turn
Most tools, like drills, work because you move a blade that cuts into a material. In this workshop we will use a wood lathe; it moves a piece of wood while keeping the blade stable. Inspired by wheel thrown pottery, we will create wood spindles that become part of a growing collaborative sculpture. Children ages 5 and up up can try out the lathe and practice their new woodturning skills.
Blowtorches and copper pipes make for a great art project! We’ll be bonding copper pipes using real tools to learn basic soldering skills. Grab some safety goggles and a pair of work gloves before you ignite your torch and fuse together joints and cracks. You’ll be contributing to a collaborative sculpture made up of unconventional materials! Children ages 5 and up can try out the blowtorch and practice patching pipes alongside our staff members. Please note that closed-toed shoes are required for this activity.
