Adults Only Night: The Science Behind Science Fiction
Thursday, April 12, 2018
6 p.m.-10 p.m.
Galleries and activities: 6 p.m.-10 p.m.
Bar Last Call: 9:30 p.m.
Those flying aliens, larger-than-life superheroes and gravity-defying space vessels from the movies may not be real, however, they didn’t materialize out of thin air either. Explore the behind the scenes science that goes into the making of all of your favourite sci-fi movie effects.
Adults Only Night is a licensed event for those 18 years of age and older. All visitors must provide valid government issued photo ID.
Check out some of the things going on at Adults Only Night this month:
8-9:00 p.m. Dear Future Self
"If you could, what would you tell your future self? Would it be a reminder, a memory, a few wise words of encouragement, or something totally different? Actors, Andrew Phung (Kim's Convenience, The Beaverton) and Alexa MacKell (Loose Moose Theatre Company) present Dear Future Self, an improvised comedy show inspired by audience members messages to their future self. This hour show features two comedy dynamos taking an honest and often hilarious look at our past, present, and hopes for the future." Show Admission is free as part of Adults Only Night.
6-9:30 p.m. Join the Dark Side (they have beer!)
Alberta Beer Festivals, alongside Something Brewing are offering tasting samples of their "Dark Side Schwarzbier". Schwarzbier is a "black beer" that was first brewed in the forests of Germany. Find out if its ancient first wort hopping technique is enough to tempt you over to the Dark Side.
6-9:30 p.m. Science Fiction or Science Fact?
Join the Enova Biomimicry Club from the University of Calgary for a trivia game on whether seemingly otherworldly powers are from a sci-fi movie or if they were originally found in nature. Then, design your own superhero with those functions based off of real-life creatures with those abilities, such as the the pistol shrimp that can see infrared or the horned owl who’s claws have a pressure of 300psi when they clasp down on prey.
Cooler Than Cool with Liquid Nitrogen
In an iconic scene from Terminator 2, the villainous terminator is frozen solid using liquid nitrogen, and then shattered to pieces. However, after thawing out, he just flows back together, back to one piece. In reality, once an object is shattered, it is impossible to put the pieces back together again. To prove it to you, we decided to test it out for ourselves.
6-9:30 p.m. Green Screen Scenes
Some of your favourite Sci-Fi films are created by performers acting in front of a bright green screen. Now you get the chance to insert yourself into those scenes through the power of a little Hollywood magic (aka Science). Get a taste of how science fiction films are created, and get some sweet photos for your social media feeds while you're at it.
