Humans have been hacking the world around us since we started making bones into tools. Hacking is the art of making something the way you want it, instead of the way it is. You may have already tried hacking electronics or toys, but what about hacking your life or your mood?

PALS - Pet Access League Society 

Having a RUFF day? HACK your mood and boost your dopamine by petting the furriest dogs! Spend your evening exploring TELUS Spark as you roam with these four legged therapists!

Annex Ale Project - Beer 101 

Learn how Annex Ale Project brews their brew by getting hands-on with some of their ingredients. Learn how to HACK IT and create new flavours and textures. Stick around to sample some of their latest batches!

Poetry Hack 

Mash-up your own poetry with current Poet Laureate Sheri-D Wilson along with some of #YYC's hottest poets. Push your creative boundaries and create new poems using chopped up stanzas from these professional poets.

Electric Disco Art 

HACK the components from old CD-players, (including wires, circuits and motors) to create your own geometric drawing device. Spin your device with some paper (and a bit of creativity) to draw mathematical roulette curves. This art-making process is more commonly known as spirograph art!

Avalanching Sandpiles Simulation  

Get hands-on with hacking a sandpile simulation with the  Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary. What patterns can emerge from dropping digital grains of sand? Can you you HACK the algorithm and disrupt the patterns? 

This stimulation was designed by Stephanie Hladik & Pratim Sengupta, University of Calgary

Autonomous Vehicle Tech Display 

Learn about the technologies behind ELA - Canada's first Electrical Autonomous Shuttle Bus available to the public! ELA will be running between the Calgary Zoo LRT and TELUS Spark from 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. More info: www.RideWithEla.ca

Human Videogame Controller 

Humans are conductive beings! Using our bodies, (with a little help from some circuitry), we will hack the conductivity of our own limbs to create a custom video game controller. High-five your friends to make Pac-Man change directions. Form teams, and race against each other to see who gets the best time. You may have played Pac Man before, but you haven’t played Pac-Man like this! 

HACK IT Speakers in Inspiration Stage

Making Complexity Public - Pratim Sengupta & Stephanie Hladik (University of Calgary)

Scientists and educators often use simulations to model, explain, and to understand emergence. Explore open-source simulations of complex systems specifically designed to be accessible and usable by anyone - even young children. Sengupta and Hladik will share their experiences in designing and installing such spaces in Calgary and how facilitating these spaces will allow members of the public to meaningfully learn about science, coding, and hacking.

Hacking the Musical Mind - Dr. Daryl Caswell and the Perfect Cadence Quintet 

Explore the processes of creating and appreciating the art of music with Perfect Cadence. While recording technology preserves some aspects of the art, the challenge for the musician and for the audience is to develop better ways to enhance our appreciation of the fullness of the art form in the brief moment of existence. Experience an unauthorized glimpse into our collective musical mind.

Many people believe that Automated Vehicles are the future. Come learn about some of the technology involved in integrating Automated Vehicles into our society. Learn about how these vehicles navigate obstacles, sense road conditions and get you safely to your destination.

Poetry Hack - Slam Poetry Performance with Sheri-D Wilson, Calgary's Poet Laureate.

Spoken Word Poet/ Activist/ Award-Winning Author/Speaker/Educator - Wilson has the award-winning author of eleven books, the creator of four short films, and has released four albums which combine music and poetry. She is known for her electric performance-style, which has taken her to perform all over the world.
