Adults Only Night: Crime and Punishment
October 12, 2017
6 p.m.-10 p.m.
Galleries and activities: 6 p.m.-10 p.m.
Bar Last Call: 9:30 p.m.
Forensic scientists are constantly innovating. Every day, new techniques are being discovered to identify the previously undetectable. Unleash your inner investigator with us tonight as you become a CSI, explore the psychology of criminal behavior, and delve into the ways society has dealt with the “criminal element” throughout history.
Check out some of the things going on at Adults Only Night this month:
6-9:30 p.m. Crack the Clues
Tonight, we're going to try something we haven't tried before - an interactive mystery. Put together clues found at stations in the galleries and try some activities to figure out a mystery that we've been racking our brains over.
6-9:30 p.m. DNA Detective
You've probably seen images of the outcome of running DNA through gel electrophoresis, and if you were lucky, maybe you got to try it in highschool or university (and hey, for some of you, maybe you do it all the time). But if you're not as familiar with it as you like, come watch us try it out, and do your own analysis of some gel electrophoresis results.
6-9:30 p.m. Blood Spatter Analysis
Try out some of the different techniques that the authorities use to catch criminals with the University of Calgary's Let's Talk Science program. Can you figure out exactly how the blood spatter patterns were made?
6-9:30 p.m. Neuroscience and Criminality
Join the Neuroscience Students' Association to find out about some of the things that go on in our brains when we commit crimes.
6-9:30 p.m. Forensics with the Professionals
Join the Forensic Crime Scenes Unit from the Calgary Police Service to get a hands-on view of how they go about using fingerprint evidence in real life to solve crimes.
6-9:30 p.m. Escape Capers Puzzle Quest
You've probably heard of escape rooms - the real life adventure where you search for clues and solve puzzle to escape a locked room. Tonight, Escape Capers has created a mini puzzle quest for you to enjoy. Complete all three puzzles and you can get your name in a draw for a pair of tickets to Escape Capers! Plus you'll get a bonus clue to help you solve your TELUS Spark mystery.
6-9:30 p.m. The Pleasure of Punishment
Punishment isn't always something you want to avoid. Lady Seraphina is a Calgary-based dominatrix and sex educator, and she'll be bringing some of her devices for you to try out.
6-9:45 p.m. Murder Most Foul
It might be a while since you've played this classic parlour game, but give it another shot tonight for a fun way to close out the night. If you die, make sure you ham it up, and if you don't - congrats, you made it out of the Crime and Punishment event alive!
6-9:30 p.m. Medieval Torture Devices
We can all count ourselves very lucky not to have run afoul of the law in medieval Europe (and, you know, many other times and places, some contemporary). With some inspiration from medieval and ancient sources, come up with your own macabre creation, build it out of construction paper, and see who takes the disturbing cake.
7:15-7:45 p.m. & 8:45-9:15 p.m. Revenge and Social Media
Mélanie Paulin is a PhD student at the University of Calgary's Love Lab whose research focuses on using social media to take revenge in relationships - and she collected data here at Adults Only Night in February 2017. Hear from Paulin and her supervisor Susan Boon about the things they've learned so far about how we use social media to punish our partners.
