What’s New In Being Human

This fall, keep an eye open for some amazing new experiences in the Being Human gallery. Ten new exhibits have been added to the gallery, including activities chosen for younger audiences. Everything you encounter in the gallery will make you think about what it means to be human: What scares you? Are you easily tricked? What makes your heart race? What makes you laugh?

If you’re getting ready for your first visit, there are a few things you won’t want to miss:

  1. Lie on the Bed of Nails. This iconic exhibit returns after a brief hiatus since the science centre moved locations. The nostalgia returns just in time for TELUS Spark’s 50th anniversary. Consider your fears as you take a risk.
  2. Drink from a toilet. Snap a picture or else no one will believe it! Come face to face with social taboos, get hydrated and have a laugh. Many people can’t bring themselves to do it, are you brave enough? We promise, it’s clean…
  3. Listen to your heart beat. A drum will detect your heart rate and tap a beat to match your pulse. What gets your heart racing? Test what makes it speed up or slow down.
  4. Look at your scars under the microscope. Explore your nails, skin, and scars on a microscopic scale. You might be surprised at what you see.
  5. See how much water is in your body. Stand on the scale to see a tube of water fill with the same amount of water that’s in your body. Are you surprised? Most people are.

Beyond what’s listed above, there are five additional new experiences for you to discover and explore. The new exhibits explore different aspects of human-ness that people of all ages will find interesting. Many of the exhibits will reveal a new and possibly surprising side of who you are. Some will get your heart pumping as you test yourself and get moving. Others will make you giggle and laugh at their surprises, which you’ll just have to visit to see.

With the updates to the gallery, we’ve had to say goodbye to a few exhibits as well. We selected five exhibits that had low visitor interaction and did not best meet the needs of the gallery. The exhibits team at TELUS Spark put a lot of thought into choosing which exhibits to bring in and which to get rid of. It’s not easy, but we feel the new gallery is filled with diverse new experience that will quickly become favourites.
